January 17th City Council Meeting

This week was a doozy. I may have yelled at my monitor once or twice. Let’s dive in.

Hours 0:00 – 1:18: In which the SMART Terminal gets its day, and Mayor Hughson is weirdly rude to Max Baker.

Hours 1:18-2:21: Fire code updates, and Mayor Hughson is weird and unpleasant for a second time, advocating for some decorum rules, which again appear to target Max.

Hours 2:21-3:58: Riverbend Ranch, paid parking at the Lion’s Club, and Mayor Hughson is pretty rigid and counterproductive for a third time! What the hell.

Jane Hughson was really kind of a disaster this evening. The rest of the councilmembers were mostly complacent yes-men. (Besides Alyssa, who was continuously trying to be her diplomatic self, fighting losing battles. And besides Shane Scott, who was absent.)

Ugh. The whole meeting felt like a lot to unpack.

  1. Ugh … I was so disillusioned the first time I read your write-up re: this meeting [prompted by facebook] I decided to not comment. But today I received your email alert; taking this as a sign to comment :-).

I’ve known Jane Hughson for many years and she has always been very courteous and pleasant to me. I’ve also known Maxfield Baker for a number of years, and likewise he has been very courteous and pleasant to me. I like them both. Which is why I’m so disillusioned by their ongoing animosity.

I guess the adage “Payback is a bitch” comes into play, as I feel Jane restrained herself during the City Council meetings in putting up with Max’s antics his last term.

Sorry to ramble but I don’t have any way to put a tolerable spin on Jane vs Max.

    1. Boy do I hear you. It’s just so counterproductive to have two people who both genuinely want the best for San Marcos to get so bogged down in this kind of muck. And since Max is a private citizen, the onus of courtesy really does fall on Jane. Sometimes I wish I could mediate and play operator between the two of them, and translate each one first. (Other times, they just flat out disagree and no amount of translating is gonna pave over that.)

Also, I hadn’t realized the email notification is so delayed! Weird.
